Tracheostomy: the life-choice

(To breathe or not to breath? That is the ultimate question!)

This link will take you to a very informative site regarding tracheostomy. Remember, it's a life-choice, and to each his own. It worked for me but...

This is a home portable suction unit, used to suction mucus from the trache and in conjunction with the cough assist when suctioning mucus from lungs.

You will need to attach a plastic suction tube, called a Yankour, to the plastic tubing for mouth suctioning. Don't worry you'll be taught all this by the pulmonology team.

If you choose a trache you'll use the same equipment found on the pulmonary page. The cough assist will just/easily attach to your trache.

Portable Suction: very important and essential for trache care

Tracheostomy: a life-choice and equipment

A tracheostomy is an opening (made by an incision) through the neck into the trachea (windpipe). A tracheostomy opens the airway and aids breathing.

A tracheostomy may be done in an emergency, at the patient’s bedside or in an operating room. Anesthesia (pain relief medication) may be used before the procedure. Depending on the person’s condition, the tracheostomy may be temporary or permanent.
